Raquel Thomas

Raquel has been the Director of Resource Management and Training at the Iwokrama International Centre for Rainforest Conservation and Development since 2005. She previously worked at the University of Guyana in Public Relations and for the Guyana Forestry Commission. Dr. Thomas holds a BSc in Biology from University of Guyana, a Diploma of Imperial College (MPhil) - DIC Tropical Forest Ecology from the Imperial College, University of London, and a PhD in Tropical Forest Ecology from the Imperial College, University of London. She has over 20 years of  management and research experience in natural resources management with in-depth knowledge of sustainable forest management including forest certification issues, tropical forest ecology,  biodiversity and climate issues, protected areas management,  nature based tourism, capacity building, and community related work.   Her interest in environmental issues has seen her active in   a volunteering capacity as Past Chair of the Guyana Marine Turtle Conservation Society, and also part of the Guyana Society for Biodiversity and Ecosystems and International Society for Biodiversity of the Guiana Shield. Her interests extends to gender and human rights issues and has co-founded local organizations such as Guyana Citizens Initiative and Citizens Against Rape
