Pamela Henson

Pamela Henson directs the Institutional History program at Smithsonian Institution Archives and is Historian in Residence, History Department, American University.  Her Ph.D. is in history and philosophy of science from the University of Maryland.  Research interests include the history of natural history, museums, women in science, visual materials in historical research and oral history methodology. Recent publications include “A Baseline Environmental Survey: 1910–12 Smithsonian Biological Survey of the Panama Canal Zone,” Environmental History, 2016.  She co-curated Welcome to Your Smithsonian, Smithsonian Castle, 2015. Recent awards include 2015 Feis Award for Public History, American Historical Association, and Smithsonian Secretary’s Gold Medal for Exceptional Service, 2014.
