Fred Swaniker is on a mission to bring better leadership to Africa and the world. He is the founder and CEO of the African Leadership Group — an ecosystem of organizations that is catalyzing a new era of entrepreneurial and ethical African Leaders. Over the past 15 years, he has founded and led the pre-University African Leadership Academy, African Leadership University, the African Leadership Network, and ALX — a next-generation leadership development and talent sourcing platform. Collectively, these endeavors aim to transform the continent by developing three million African leaders by 2035.
Fred previously worked as a McKinsey consultant in South Africa before earning an MBA from Stanford and becoming an entrepreneur. In 2019, he was recognized by TIME as one of the 100 most influential people in the world. Fred has also been recognized as a World Economic Forum Young Global Leader; an Echoing Green Fellow; a Fellow of the Aspen Institute’s Global Leadership Network; a TED Fellow; and was named one of Forbes’ top ten young ‘power men’ in Africa in 2011.
In addition to his MBA from Stanford, Fred has an undergraduate degree from Macalester College and honorary doctorates from Middlebury College, Macalester College, and Nelson Mandela University. Fred sits on a number of boards and advisory boards—including the Graca Machel Trust, AGRA and Andela. He also sits on Nestle’s Creating Shared Value Council.
